Autumn part of the festival opens Mahler’s correspondence with his family

The Image of the Mahler Family in Correspondence

In 2006, the German publisher Weidle Verlag released a volume containing over 500 letters from the Mahler-Rosé Collection, comprising correspondence between Gustav Mahler, his parents, and his siblings. The vast majority of these letters were addressed to Mahler’s sister, Justina. Consequently, the Austrian musicologist Helmut Brenner—who arranged the correspondence in chronological order and provided critical annotations—titled the publication Liebste Justi. Briefe an die Familie.

The most significant letters have been selected for translation; they document Mahler’s career, family circumstances, the illnesses and deaths of his parents, and his challenges regarding his siblings—Alois, Otto, Justina, and Emma—whom he cared for following their parents' passing and whose inheritances he managed.

This selection was curated and will be presented by PhDr. Alena Jakubíčková, a translator and interpreter.

The event will take place as part of European Heritage Days at 3:00 p.m. at the Gustav Mahler House.
